The Blessing Lessons

At 16, she had to choose between living a life of poverty on her father’s land, surviving Smith Hill’s many opium dens, back-breaking field work in Tal Bottom’s Georgia’s peach peanut and cotton groves, and an arranged marriage. Elizabeth Evelyn Wright becomes destined for great life lessons by going against her father’s wishes to attend Tuskegee Institute to escape poverty. Overcome an inadequate education and better her living conditions through education by receiving a formal education at the famed Tuskegee Normal Institute under the scrutiny of Assistant Principal Margaret James-Murray.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: ALBERT COWART, JR.
Professor Albert Cowart Junior Earned his Bachelor of Arts in Theatre at Cal-State University Fresno, California. While at Cal State University Fresno, where he received teaching credentials in secondary education.
Following Undergraduate School, Cowart Jr. attended graduate school at the University of California in Los Angeles. While there, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre with special emphasis in playwriting and acting.
As an educator, he served as professor of Theater and department chair of the Arts department at Los Angeles Southwest College.
The Hollywood Branch of the NAACP awarded him an Image Award for his work in African American theatre. His plays have been produced in various venues nationwide, including Savannah State College, InterCity Cultural Center, The Robey Theatre Company in Los Angeles, Upstate Theatre Company in Baton Rouge, to name a few venues. Mister Cowart is proud to be associated with The Robey Theatre Company and looks forward to future productions in Los Angeles.
